Following thousands of years of sustainable stewardship by the Tsleil-Waututh First Nation, encroaching industry and development polluted their traditional territory surrounding Vancouver to the point that food harvesting had to be banned in the 1970s. Today, over 45 years later, Tsleil-Waututh have restored some specific habitats within their territory to safe levels for clam harvesting, both as a means for environmental justice and for the reclamation and rejuvenation of their culture, which are intrinsically intertwined. When the Tide Goes Out tells an emotionally stirring account with stunning cinematography and historic imagery, effectively bridging the past to the present.
